pidof

This software is owned by The university of California, Irvine, and is not distributed under any version of the GPL. GPL is a fine series of licenses, but the owners of the software need it to be distributed under these terms.
Inspired by the surprisingly convenient "-s" option of notify-when-up, pidof is a program that's intended to eliminate the manual (but very common) procedure of using "ps" and grep or less to look up a process' pid, before feeding that pid to some other program.

This is perhaps illustrative of what it does:

seki-strombrg> echo `Pidof -S xinetd`
/Dcs/seki/strombrg/bin/Pidof: Single match found: "2621 xinetd -stayalive -pidfile /var/run/xinetd.pid"
2621

seki-strombrg> echo `pidof -s gnome-terminal`
0) 5414 /usr/bin/gnome-terminal
1) 19407 gnome-terminal --geometry 80x45 -e /tmp/sshgui-19396-11194866388735

Enter number corresponding to process: 0
5414

...and a more pragmatic example:
