Japan-China Go Exchange

In 1960-1966, and again from 1972, there has been a yearly visit of Japanese players to China, or of Chinese players to Japan. Here the games from 1960-1984. In 1984 the China-Japan Supergo Series started.

1960

In 1960, China's Foreign Minister, Chen Yi, a fanatical go player, arranged for five Japanese professional players to visit. The government had by then recognized go as a national sport and established go institutes in Beijing and Shanghai; however, the Japanese team won 32 of its 35 games.

Go World 10 writes:

1978

Go World 9 and 10 write:
From the 6th to the 27th June a ten-member Chinese team, consisting of eight players, the team leader and a secretary, toured Japan and played seven team matches with Japanese players. The final result was a tie, 28 to 28. The Chinese players were Chen Zude, Nieh Wei-p'ing, Wu Sung-Sheng, Hua I-kang, Ch'en Chih-kang, Yang I-lun, Chiang Ming-chiu, K'ung Shang-ming (F).

A new feature of this tour was a special three-match series (the 3rd to 5th matches) in which the same Japanese team played the Chinese team.

In the 28-28 score, public haya-go (fast games) are not included. The 1978 tour began with a haya-go between Takemiya and Nieh in Tokyo. Takemiya won by 20.5 points. Another haya-go, in which Hashimoto Shoji 9-dan defeated Ch'en Tsu-te by resignation, was played in Osaka.

Round 2 was in Sapporo, with strong amateurs as opponents.

1984

Go World 35 and 37 write:
1984: The unique feature of this tour was two best-of-three individual series. If a best-of-three was decided 2--0, then the pairings were changed in the 3rd round and the players played 'exhibition' games.

Result for Japan: 33 wins, 22 losses, 1 no result. Japan won 11 of the 16 best-of-three series played. Kato played six games against the tourists, winning all six. Liu Xiaoguang won both his best-of-three matches. Nieh won only twice, but did have the consolation of beating Sakata in a haya-go exhibition game.

The Chinese players were the top eight from a qualifying tournament, namely 1. Ch'ien Yu-ping 6-dan (age 17), 2. Nieh Wei-p'ing 9-dan (age 31), 3. Ma Hsiao-ch'un 9-dan (age 19), 4. K'ung Shang-ming 7-dan (age 28), 5. Wang Yuan 5-dan (age 24), 6. Liu Xiaoguang 7-dan (age 24), 7. Ts'ao Ta-yuan 7-dan (age 22), 8. Sung Hsueh-lin 6-dan (age 22).
