The first two years the title was earned by winning an (8-player) League, not by beating a challenger. In editions #3-20, the challenger was the winner of a 16-player knockout tournament. Since the 21st edition, the challenger is the winner of a 7-player league. For this main tournament or league, see the subpages linked to in the first column.
Komi was 5.5 until 2003, and 6.5 from 2004.
